Comprehension is a complex cognitive process. Our brains need to deal with several aspects at the same time, but the good news is that they are really fantastic. They can process lots of information without you even noticing it. In order to improve your listening comprehension, you need to be sure to cover all the steps your brain requires to understand.

La comprensión es un proceso cognitivo complejo. Nuestros cerebros necesitan abordar varios aspectos al mismo tiempo, lo cual no es problema para ellos porque son realmente fantásticos.   • We “listen” to what our ears are trained to hear. If in your mother tongue there are not sounds we have in Spanish and it’s difficult for you to distinguish them, you should work on that first. The most common difficulties are some consonants and vowels. Check out these articles:

  • Predict what people would say according to the context. Social interactions tend to have similar structures in a specific culture. You should approach the Hispanic cultures and identify similarities and differences from yours.

If you can identify where people are (in the street, in a restaurant, in a TV show, etc.)  how people are (excited, mad, sad, and so on), you’ll be able to predict the topic of the conversation and pay closer attention to details and extra information.

  • Don’t worry about understanding every single word. If you’re trying to understand all of the words you hear, you might miss a lot of information, because your attention has moved to a specific word. If you don’t understand a word, skip it and try to infer the meaning. If you have the opportunity to play that audio on your own again, check new words only after you have created a hypothesis about the main idea.

No te preocupes por entender cada palabra. You can also read the news or articles you like to enrich your vocabulary.

If you have moved to a Spanish-speaking country or if your job requires proficiency in Spanish, learning a new language is a great motivational factor especially if it is going to be a part of your daily life. Thanks to the experience of our instructors at Espanovo, we have compiled four practices or habits that you should do every day in order to learn and acquire Spanish as a second or foreign language.

Si te has mudado a un país hispano o si tu trabajo requiere el dominio del español, aprender un nuevo idioma puede ser una gran motivación y en especial si va a ser parte de tu vida diaria. Gracias a la experiencia de nuestros profesores en Espanovo, hemos recopilado cuatro prácticas o hábitos que deberías hacer todos los días para avanzar en la adquisición del español como segunda lengua o lengua extranjera.

1.Read an article of your interest from a local Spanish-language newspaper. Try to choose topics that you enjoy reading. Reading articles of personal interests will help to maintain your motivation while keeping you updated with the local news, politics and etc. from the countries you’re interested in. Here we share some of the most important digital newspapers from countries that have the largest number of Spanish speakers:

 

1. Lee una artículo de tu interés en algún periódico local de habla hispana. Trata de seleccionar temas que te gusten. Disfrutarás de tu lectura mientras te actualizas con lo que pasa en el mundo y en los países que te llamen la atención. Además de tener una aplicación disponible para Android y IOS, en esta página web encontrarás un diccionario y un entrenador de vocabulario en donde podrás hacer juegos interactivos y practicar las palabras que agregaste. Esas palabras serán significativas para ti, porque las has buscado antes. 

3. Listen to at least 30 minutes of music in Spanish. We recommend the Spotify playlist of Latin American Singers. You can also use “Latin singers” on the Spotify search engine. To make your practice more meaningful you can download the musixmatch app. This app will allow you to read the lyrics of the songs, which will help build your vocabulary and improve your listening comprehension.

3.Escucha al menos 30 minutos de música en español, te recomendamos la playlist en Spotify de cantantes latinoamericanos. Puedes utilizar en el buscador de Spotify “cantantes latinos”.
